If you happen to be walking through Madison Square and are mindful of your surroundings, you will see something that evokes all types of feelings. There are life size sculptures peering over the ledges of the buildings surrounding Madison Square Park. A cruel joke? Some think so. I find the installation genius and was so intrigued by it that I infiltrated many of the buildings just to get some quick shots of the mayhem. Most of the sculptures are merely impossible to get to and most of them you need to talk with the building management in order to gain access. I managed to spend 3 hours going through service exits, climbing twelve flights of stairs, and acting clueless and lost in order to gain access to a few of the rooftops.
So what exactly is all of this crazy artistic expression you ask. It is the work of Antony Gormley, the English sculpturer who has recently inspired me tremendously. If you ever have a chance to see his work it will change your perspective on public art. It is amazing how much controversey these $400,000 life size sculptures have stirred up in NYC as you can imagine. Personally, I feel Antony’s art brings out the dark and finite reality of the human condition as well as the beauty of space and time. For information on the exhibit, click here.
